California MerlotCalifornia Merlot has gotten a bad rap, but much of it was earned. Miles, the character in Sideways who won't drink Merlot, wasn't saying anything we hadn't heard before.
That said, there is a lot of great Merlot being grown in California. The trick is to find the good ones floating in the ocean of bad Merlot.
That is where a great store like 67 Wine comes in. We aren't buying out of a price book, or looking at fancy labels. We taste the wines, and buy the ones we like. We have a few we carry because our customers like them and want them, and there is nothing wrong with that. We aren't so stuck up that we feel we know better thatn our customers what they should be drinking. We just have no problem finding 30 or 40 really good Merlots at the right prices.
