Merlot Based Wines (wines made primarily from the Merlot wine grape)
Everyone remembers the line from Sideways - "I am NOT drinking any #$%^&* Merlot!"
He said it, but he really didn't mean it. After all, the wine he goes on about, and which he ends up drinking from a paper cup at the end, is the legendary Cheval Blanc 1961. That wine, of course, is about half Merlot.
Merlot is one of the worlds most noble grapes. Merlot is the very foundation of Bordeaux, acting as the base for well over half of all Bordeaux produced.
Even in the US, when treated right, with lower yields, proper climate and skilled winemaking, Merlot is fantastic. It is easy to drink, with rich flavors, moderate tannin and mild acidity. No wonder it is still America's favorite red.
In addition, Merlot has thrived all over the world. We carry Merlot from, in addition to Bordeaux and the US, Australia, Chile, Argentina, Italy and more.
