South African Wine
Traditionally, South African wine was known for two varietals - Chenin Blanc (known there as Steen) and Pinotage, a less than successful try at making a hardier, higher yielding Pinot Noir (by crossing it with Cinsault, which grows like a weed).
Their Chenin Blanc is still top notch, and Pinotage still has its devotees. But South Africa is now known for much more.
They are now making excellent wines from many varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Syrah (Shiraz) and Sauvignon Blanc can stand with the top ranks of those varieties from around the world.
