Spain's rich wine-making history dates back all the way to about 200BC, so it's no surprise that it contains the most land under vine in the world. However, due to an arid climate and consequently poor yields, Spain is only the world's 3rd largest producer of wine. Much like Portugal, modern wine-making methods reached the country in the early 1990's, and the turn from an emphasis on quantity to quality has been a trademark of their recent success.
