Wine district
in southern Italy, the heel of the Italian boot that vies
annually with Sicily to produce the highest volume of
wine, much of it undistinguished... The major grapes, all red, are Negroamaro, Primitivo
and Malvasia Nera. Generally speaking, the Salento
Peninsula produces the highest quality wines, of which
the best known are Salice Salentino and Primitivo
Di Manduria.
