Italian Wine - Piedmont

The chief grape variety responsible for many of Italy’s best wines is Nebbiolo, said to take its name from the fog (nebbia) that cloaks the Piedmont hills at harvest time. Another important grape is Barbera, which yields robust red wines from the everyday to the extraordinary. Other red Piedmontese grapes of importance are Dolcetto, Freisa and Grignolino. Prominent white grapes include Cortese (from Gavi in particular), Moscato, Arneis and Erbaluce. Piedmont also manufactures vast quantities of Vermouth, a specialty of Torino made from the Moscato grape.
