Rhone Valley - French Wines

The river lends its name to one of the most picturesque as well as productive wine regions in France. Most of the Rhône’s southern journey takes it through hot and dry country, and because the grapes receive a maximum amount of sun, vintages vary less than in many other fine French wine regions. The wines tend to be full-flavored: Reds are robust and alcoholic and the best need time to mature. As could be predicted for such a warm region, the whites are less important, just 4 percent of production. They tend to be full-bodied, floral and have a lush texture from lowish acidity. The lively, stylish rosés are among the best in France.

The Rhône wine region in France is divided into north and south. The Northern Rhone produces Syrah based reds and pure Viognier whites. The Southern Rhone produces Châteauneuf-du-Pape and other blends from several varieties. The first cultivated vines were likely planted in 600 BC.
