The history of the Vietti winery traces its roots back to the 19th Century. The estate, which has been in the Vietti family for four generations, is based in the village of Castiglione Falletto in Piedmont’s Langhe region. In 1919 Mario Vietti transformed the family’s farm into a grape growing and wine producing business, creating the first Vietti labeled wines. Alfredo Currado married Mario’s daughter Luciana and made a name for Vietti’s single-vineyard Barolo and Barbera. He also put the native Piedmont varietal Arneis on the wine map. In 1990 Alfredo and Luciana’s son Luca joined the family business as winemaker after working at California’s Simi Winery, Opus One, Long Vineyards and Bordeaux’s Mouton-Rothschild. His innovative winemaking utilizes a unique combination of modern and traditional practices. He eliminated equipment that measures acid and tannin levels in favor of a more intuitive approach. Vietti organically farms more than 25 single vineyards with vines up to 90 years of age.

From one of the region?s most celebrated vineyards, the 2009 Barolo Brunate lavishes on smoky, granite and mineral notes that make this wine absolutely irresistible. Even the drawing of a snail on the label seems to hammer home one obvious point: This wine is built for longer cellar aging. Its rich texture, velvety feel and firm structure are guarantees that it will become increasingly elegant and finessed with time. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.

A pretty red, offering delicate floral and red berry aromas, with tobacco and briar notes matched to an elegant frame. The firm tannins mesh well, giving this a balanced impression overall. Best from 2016 through 2027. 300 cases made. –BS

Gastronomy: excellent with roast of red meat and game; typical is brasato cooked with Barolo as well as many rich dishes of the international cooking. Very good accompained with dried fruits or anytime enjoyed by itself.
Serving temperature: 20°C 68°F. If it is possible to open the bottle two hours before serving Barolo or decanter in carafe.
