The Carmenère Story - The Short Version

Carmenère was thought to be a "lost" wine grape, not replanted in Bordeaux after Phylloxera wiped out most Bordeaux vineyards in the years around 1900. Now, it's back!

Just a few years ago, they were doing genetic testing on grapes in Chile, and it turns out that some of what they had been calling Merlot for generations was actually Carmenère. Now, some have the idea that Carmenère should be to Chile what Malbec (another once little used Bordeaux grape) is to Argentina. We'll have to wait and see about that, but these Carmenère based wines are available today.
