Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the greatest red wine grape of the Piedmont. It is the only grape allowed in Barolo and Barbaresco. Other highly prized versions are Nebbiolo d'Alba and Langhe Nebbiolo.

Nebbiolo make wine that is blue-purple in color and translucent. Traditionally, it is highly tannic, but modern production seems to be taming that characteristic. The nose is quite floral, with an undercurrent of tar. The flavors found include violets, wild herbs, cherries, raspberries, truffles, tobacco, prunes and tar. Traditional Nebbiolo wines can require years of aging to allow the tannins to precipitate and allow other characteristics to show through.
