California Chardonnay

Chardonnay remains the most planted wine grape in California, and Americas favorite wine to drink. According to the Wine Institute, Chardonnay made up 26% of all table wine shipped from California wineries in 2007.

California Chardonnay comes in a variety of styles. They range from unoaked Chards like Morgan Metallico and Bocage to richly oaked wines like Beringer Private Reserve and Grgich Hills. The range of flavors goes from crisp green apple (Landmark Overlook, Bonterra) to ripe, tropical fruits (Talbott Sleepy Hollow, Ferrari-Carano).

While many wineries have backed off on the oak, the oaky/buttery California Style still predominates. It remains the favorite of our customers. We had a semi-blind tasting a couple of years ago in which we offered the oaked and unoaked Chardonnays from five different wineries. Many people who walked up expecting to prefer the unoaked versions ended up liking the oaked Chardonnay more.
