California Zinfandel

Zinfandel is often considered to be California's native grape, although we now know it is genetically the same as Italy's Primativo.

At the low end of the price scale, Zins are fresh and fruity, though not particularly complex wines. As prices go higher, the wines become richer with a bramble quality that adds complexity.

Styles, across the price spectrum, are split two ways. Zinfandel can be drier, higher in acidity, reminiscent of fresh raspberry. Many though are made in a far richer style, with lower acidity, that is more reminiscent of raspberry jam. All can be quite spicy, often with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.
