ChardonnayChardonnay is the most noble of the white wine grapes, producing more high quality wines than any other white variety.
It's ancestral home is in Burgundy, it's palace garden is Le Montrachet. Burgundy, the color, is red, as is much of the wine from Burgundy, the place. Chardonnay is the premier white grape of the region, and makes classic wines. Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet are the villages that are most closely identified with White Burgundy.
In the new world, Chardonnay has found a new home in just about every wine growing country. In the US, cooler climates like the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County and the Santa Maria Valley in Santa Barbera make outstanding, rich, Chardonnay. Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and South Africa all make fine Chardonnay.
