Trimbach Riesling 2011

Trimbach Riesling 2011

Sku: 003226

The classic grape of Alsace. At once delicate and vital, its intense fruit is given great length by a backbone of crisp acidity producing some of the world’s greatest and long-lasting wines.

Tasting notes
Beautiful in color with a hint of green on the edge, this wine needs a few more months to reveal its potential and will age gracefully another few years. The nose is developed and shows a hint of mineral flavor associated with good ripeness and acidity and a lingering clean and dry finish. It is ready to drink now but has the potential to age another five years.

When the weather began to cool down, I decided it was time to be sure we had Trimbach Riesling well stocked.  Though the wine drinks well all year, it really shines with fall fare. While many Alsatian producers adjust their winemaking from one vintage to the next to meet changing fashion—especially with regard to sugar levels—the Trimbach family has always held to its house style of vinifying their wines dry. This has led to a legacy of beautifully made, dry Rieslings that always win with food.

The Trimbach Family has been a fixture in Alsace for four centuries and 13 generations, tending vineyards in the limestone-rich soil in and around Ribeauvillé. The wines are cellar aged for several years before they are released. The result is a Riesling that is a joy to drink, and—for me—a lovely reminder of a memorable afternoon.

Food pairing
I dared not try to recreate any of the dishes that were served at the Marea luncheon and opted instead for a simple pan-grilled pork chop, dusted with fennel, coriander and saffron. The 2011 Riesling was a delightful partner: beautifully balanced, with Bosc pear fruit and bright acidity that asserts itself without being too citrusy.
