Marques de Riscal Rioja Reserva 2008

750ML
Sku: 003336

The reserva wines of Marqués de Riscal are made principally from Tempranillo vines which are over 15 years old. This is a variety that ages well in wood, producing wines with a good tannic structure, colour and acidity. . The reserva wines of Riscal spend approximately two years in American oak barrels, forming a wine that adheres to the principles of classic Rioja wines.

Review
A classic Rioja Reserva. Full bodied and muscular, yet smoothly polished and embellished with complex aromas of vanilla and toasted oak, combined with summer fruit flavors.

Deep, dark ruby red color. The nose is very charming and complex with waves of plum, blackberry and cherry with accents of anise, allspice, earth, vanilla, and toasted oak. The palate is in agreement with the nose delivering ripe and semi-tart fruit with a juicy core flanked by spice, earth, and oak. Simply beautiful with ideal balance, great length, and supple tannins. Great Value
Wine Advocate 88 points (Dec 2013)
The 2008 Reserva seems like a much more serious wine, with fresh notes of cherries, some leather and pepper and a tight palate that reveals good balance, purity of flavors and good length. It should age well, as it has good balance. Drink 2014-2019.

Wine maker notes
Cherry-red color with good robe. Spicy, balsamic aromas of great complexity, with notes of ripe dark berries and light toasted nuances.
On the palate it is full and tasty, with good structure and rounded, elegant tannins. The finish is long and fresh, with a slight reminder of the fine oak.

Marqués de Riscal was founded in the 1850s in the small village of Elciego in the Alava region of Rioja. Breaking with tradition, a French winemaker was employed to oversee the introduction of French grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon is still planted), French vinification techniques and the construction of a new winery built along Bordeaux lines.

Within five years the Bodega was winning prizes, culminating in the Diplome d'Honneur, the highest accolade at the XIII Exposition de Bordeaux, which it won in 1895.

Throughout its history Marqués de Riscal has pioneered new techniques and standards that have led to ever greater character and consistency in their wines. Committed to the highest levels of quality, Marqués de Riscal can count amongst its technical advisers upon the eminent French oenologists Guy Guimberteau of the Bordeaux Wine Institute and Paul Pontallier of Château Margaux.
