|Merlot isone of our most distinctive expressions, thanks to the nuances that vigneron Dave Koball has discovered in our vineyards. The 2008 vintage comprises lots of Merlot from our own Los Cerros and McNab Ranch vineyards, as well as the Milovina vineyard. A long growing season and a 50-year frost event produced a low fruit yield with concentrated flavors. The grapes were harvested at optimum maturity to capture the ripe fruit flavors and avoid harsh tannins. The lots were fermented separately and underwent full malolactic fermentation before being combined to create the final blend. The heritage of Bordeaux can be experienced in the blend, with added touches of Syrah, Zinfandel, and Carignane. The wine was aged for eight months using a combination French and American oak of which 40% was new. The resulting 2008 vintage has aromas of black plums, dark cherries and cranberries with flavors of dark berries, toasty oak and vanilla spice. In the mouth, this wine has an elegant and restrained style with nice structure and balance, soft tannins and a long finish.
