Penfolds Shiraz Cabernet Koonunga Hill 2011

Penfolds Shiraz Cabernet Koonunga Hill 2011

750ML
Sku: 005377

Koonunga Hill is a multi-district shiraz cabernet, based largely on Barossa, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra fruit. It is a classic Penfolds maturation-style wine where fruit complexity and vivacity, rather than oak, are brought to the fore. The original Koonunga Hill blend is still just as popular today. The wine shows all the rich voluptuousness and alluring spice of great Australian shiraz and adds a welcome element of structure and spine, thanks to some premium cabernet sauvignon fruit. Although remaining true to its origins of style, there has been a steady progression of refinement. Increased fragrancy and richness of fruit, buoyancy and weight gives this wine immediate current appeal and outstanding cellar-ability over the medium term.

Rating
2009: 88 Points - Josh Raynolds, Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellars: "Deep ruby. Cherry, licorice and dark cola on the nose. Bitter cherry and mint flavors pick up smoky and peppery qualities in the middle palate and show good depth and power. Finishes with good cut and lingering notes of cherry pit and dark chocolate. Pretty serious for an entry-level wine; I've had decade-old versions of this wine that were delicious and I suspect that this will age nicely as well. "

2009: 85 Points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2009 Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet gives notes of ripe blackberries and warm cherries with hints of plums, black currant and tree bark. Medium-bodied, it has just enough flavor supported by medium-high acid, a low to medium level of soft tannins and a medium-long finish. Drink it now to 2018+. "

Wine maker notes
Sweet dark plum fruits, red berries and white fruit cake aromatics. There is a mocha/coffee and vanilla lift stemming from the balanced well integrated use of seasoned oak.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon has established itself as one of Australia's favourite premium red wines. Since its first vintage in 1976, Koonunga Hill's reputation has been built upon its affordable price, its approachability in its youth, with the potential to develop if carefully cellared.
