Kanonkop Estate Pinotage 2010

Kanonkop Estate Pinotage 2010

Review
For decades, Kanonkop – South Africa’s equivalent of a “First Growth” – has set the standard for the notoriously fickle Pinotage grape, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. The estate’s stunning, age-worthy bottlings show the heights this unique varietal can attain when placed in the hands of a master! Alluringly complex and distinctive, this benchmark Pinotage boasts juicy layers of dark berries, ripe banana and cassis intertwined with hints of bacon and mocha.

The 2010 Pinotage does not quite have the complexity and personality of the previous vintage despite rigorous coaxing. Perhaps this has closed down in recent months? The palate is medium-bodied with a supple, fleshy, caressing opening. The oak needs another couple of years to fully integrate, and the finish is glitzy but without the tension of the 2009. This is still a very commendable Pinotage however.
The 2010 Pinotage, raised in 70% new oak for 16 months, missing a little lift and clarity on the nose compared to its peers. The palate is much better with crisp tannins and pert, earthy red berry fruits. The palate is so attractive that you wish that the aromatics would deliver more personality. Perhaps a little bottle age may benefit this wine? Drink 2014-2019. ”

Wine maker notes
Full bodied wine with a dark purple colour. Intense fruit flavors with soft ripe tannins give this wine maturation potential of up to 15-20 years.

Food pairing
Red meat or spicy Asian style dishes.
