Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot 2010

Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot 2010

Sku: 015376

In 1989, Carolyn and Jim Pride purchased the historic Summit Ranch in the Mayacamas Mountain Range of California. After 2 years of extensive renovations, the family released their first vintage in 1991. A family-owned and operated company, Carolyn and her children Suzanne Pride Bryan and Steven Pride manage this 235 acre estate. The winery and vineyards straddle the dividing line between Napa and Sonoma. As such, Pride Mountain wines can be designated Napa Valley, Sonoma County or both, ergo the tagline on the label, “One Ranch Two Counties. Winemaker Sally Johnson holds a master’s degree from UC Davis winemaking program and is assisted by associate winemaker Romel Rivera and Steven Pride. The sustainably farmed vineyards are planted on six different types of soil. The most common is called Goulding cobbly loam association well-draining soils that are primarily composed of cobbles and gravel.

Tasting notes
Fermented in stainless steel and aged in French oak, this medium-bodied wine presents signature varietal notes of black cherry, ripe plum and vanilla. Flavors of blueberry pie and ripe plums with hints of camphor and resiny underbrush mingle with soft, finely grained tannins.

Wine Advocate 90 points (Dec 2012)
This year, the 2010 Merlot is the most fragrant and lightest of the entry-level wines at Pride. Sweet red cherries, dried flowers, tobacco and spices all waft from the glass of this delicate, fragrant wine, which is best suited for near and mid-term drinking. The 2010 Merlot is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

Wine maker notes
Built more like a Cabernet Sauvignon than a Merlot, this powerhouse vintage of 100% Merlot is as firm and extracted as can be, with an amazing concentration of color, ripe black fruit flavors and aromas. Currant and cassis, cocoa and espresso bean elements are jam-packed into this gentle giant, coating the entire palate with soft chewy tannins that melt away in a two-minute long finish.

Technical notes
(100% Merlot).
