Handley Chardonnay 2011

Handley Chardonnay 2011

Sku: 015485

Founded in 1982 by winemaker Milla Handley, Handley Cellars is located in the Anderson Valley appellation of Mendocino County, California. Milla Handley and co-winemaker Randy Schock make key winemaking and vinification decisions such as percentage of whole berries, type of fermentation yeast, punch down regiment, length of fermentation time and barrel type based on vintage. “We use a number of techniques to promote appropriate acidity, minerality and aromatic qualities, says Milla. She and Randy are fermentation specialists and will use up to 20 different cultured or natural yeasts per harvest. Milla and Randy prefer to work with winemakers who practice sustainable farming and all 30 acres of the Handley estate are CCOF certified organic.

Tasting notes
Delicate aromas of ripe apple, pear, white florals and vanilla lead to flavors of apple pie, baking spices, satsumas and a long Meyer lemon cream finish.

Ultimate Beverage Challenge 88 points (Jun 2013)
Bouquet is tart and mildly spicy, with hints of pineapple and vanilla. Has a dry, mineral-like ’tongue on stone’ quality in the flavor profile that makes it ideal as an accompaniment for grilled fish or chicken. Medium long finish.”

Technical notes
The fruit was whole cluster pressed to tank, naturally settled, fermented on its fine lees with battonage and aged for five months in French oak puncheons (70%) stainless steel tanks (30%). 21% of the barrels were new. The wine was transferred to tank, blended and bottled.
