Franz Weninger took over the grape growing and winemaking responsibilities at his parent's estate in 1982. In his own words, he claims that, "The winemaker can only bring out that which is already in the grape." Great care is taken in the vineyards, and in 2006 he began farming practices based upon Biodynamic principles. Franz had been farming according to strict principles for many years, so that converting to Biodynamic production, under the direction of Dr. Andrew C. Lorand, was simply the next logical step towards coming closer to nature and improving quality. In the vineyard, the vines are sprayed with Biodynamic teas and compost. No insecticides, herbicides or systematic pesticides are ever used.
The 2008 Franz is just the perfect wine for any occasion! A blend of 60% Blaufränkisch and 40% Merlot, the wine draws together the best of both grapes with spicy fruit elements along with freshness, elegance, tannins and texture. Beautifully dark in the glass, the aroma picks up hints of cloves and herbs overlaying the rich fruit flavors that cascade into the spicy finish.
|2008: 88 Points - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast: "A warming, ripe wine, freshly juicy, but with some light structure. It is a wine to be consumed early, but it has all right fruits and tannins, layered with licorice and chocolate. "
