In 1977, Jerry and Flora Komes stumbled across a dilapidated wine estate in the heart of Napa Valley, California and saw its potential. Today the third generation of the family, the Komes’ and the Garveys, continues a legacy of winemaking excellence. Together they own 650 acres of prime Napa Valley vineyard land in some of the region’s most coveted subappellations, including Rutherford, St. Helena, Oakville and Carneros. Each vintage, the best fruit (about 20%) is retained for Flora Springs, and the remainder is sold to neighboring Napa Valley wineries. The estate’s vineyards are organic and sustainably farmed. The red wines are produced using solar power generated from the 6,500 square feet of panels that the family installed at Komes Ranch in 2007. Inside the stone walls of the century-old winery are stainless steel and concrete fermentors specifically sized to match each vineyard block. Below the winery, is the family’s 1,000 foot cellar. Carved into the hillside, it naturally provides the ideal, energy efficient environment to age wines. Paul Steinauer, who began working as Assistant Winemaker in 1990, was promoted to Winemaker in 2008.
|Soliloquy presents bright fruit and acidity that is nicely tempered by flavors of melon and fig. The finish features hints of creaminess that is balanced by touches of minerality.
|89 Points, Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate: The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc is a gorgeous wine. It shows lovely focus in its bright melon, pear and floral notes. Clean, mineral notes frame the long finish.
|(53% Soliloquy Sauvignon Blanc clone/47% Sauvignon Musque clone). This single vineyard was named after the varietal and the parcel from which it is grown. Flora Springs has developed a proprietary clone of Sauvignon Blanc that has been certified by UC Davis as the “Soliloquy” Sauvignon Blanc clone. Following fermentation, the wine matured sur lie for seven months in three different vessels: concrete, stainless steel and stainless barrels.
|Founded in 1978 by Jerry and Flora Komes, along with their children — John Komes and his wife Carrie, and Julie Komes-
Garvey and her husband Pat Garvey, Flora Springs has been a family affair for three decades, developing an admirable
record for producing high quality, region-specific wines. The Komes and Garvey families own 650 acres of vineyards
throughout five appellations in the Napa Valley, enabling Flora Springs to maintain the quality of their wines through estate
grown, hand picked fruit.
Part of Flora Springs’ commitment to community and innovation is through green vineyard
practices: 100% of their vineyards are sustainably farmed, and 20% (120 acres) are organic with another 240 acres
undergoing certification. 90% of Flora Springs’ red wines currently come from organically farmed vineyards. In December
2007, Flora Springs implemented solar power at the Komes Ranch on Zinfandel Lane, enabling all of their red wine
production to go completely off the grid.
Paul Steinauer, winemaker for the past two years after acting as assistant
winemaker for eighteen years prior to his promotion, has an “old world meets new world” winemaking approach.
