This wine forms part of Clarendon Hills’ ‘Grand Cru’ classification. This wine is the ultimate expression of grenache at Clarendon Hills. It has the structure of Blewitt Springs, as it comes from the steepest part of that site, but is refined in all facets. It is sublime in its delivery of speckled elements – which shoot like a laser-guided boomerang- only to return with another flood of character on the finish. This juxtaposition of fruit, florals and minerals is one for the mantle and something to keep an eye on over 20 years.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate: "The most backward, structured, tannic, and ageworthy of these offerings is always the Grenache Romas. The estate’s flagship Grenache, it is fashioned from 86-year-old vines planted on ironstone soils at the highest elevation of the Blewitt Springs Vineyard. The 2004 Grenache Romas exhibits gorgeous notes of loamy soil, truffles, kirsch, spice box, blackberries, and licorice. This full-bodied, powerful, tannic 2004 will benefit from another 1-3 years of bottle age, and should age easily for 10-15+ years."

Dense and peppery, but not heavy, with an expressive range of blackberry, cherry and pomegranate flavors that sail through the long, open-textured finish. A lovely spicy, peppery component lifts this Grenache's personality out of the ordinary. Best from 2008 through 2020. 500 cases imported. –HS

The top Grenache cuvee (essentially a selection of the finest fruit from the Blewitt Springs vineyard) is the 2004 Grenache Old Vines Romas Vineyard. Cropped at ½ ton of fruit per acre, it boasts a deep ruby color, fabulous density, and a big, earthy bouquet of loamy soil, minerals, black raspberries, kirsch liqueur, flowers, and spice box. With great intensity as well as purity, and an expansive, savory mouthfeel, it is a fabulous offering to drink over the next 10-12 years. Score: 96. —Robert Parker, October 2005.

Located in the upper section of the Blewitt Springs vineyard, these vines were planted in 1925. Densely layered, the Romas site produces Clarendon Hills’ flagship grenache and is considered a ‘Grand Cru’.
