The Wieninger 2012 Nussberg Alte Reben Gemischter Satz displays scents and flavors of celery seed, caraway, lentil and pineapple allied to a richly meat stock savor analogous to - if quite distinct from - that which one might encounter in Chablis. Unfortunately, though, mid-palate saliva-inducement doesn’t entirely save this from the drying influence of its 14.7% alcohol, so that the finish is a bit disappointing compared with what preceded it. How this evolves depends on whether the impression of alcohol remains or becomes more prominent; but I would monitor it carefully over the next several years. Its author reports that the alcohol was much more disruptive very soon after bottling than it is now. (To reiterate for the record, this wine is informed by mixed plantings of Pinot Blanc, Neuburger, Welschriesling, Gruner Veltliner, Sylvaner, Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, Traminer und Riesling.)

Old vines from the Bisamberg Vineyard have produced a rich, beautifully ripe wine. Its white and yellow fruit flavors give richness, concentration and a great spicy character. With its density, structure and intense acidity, it’s likely to age well over 3-5 years. Glass stopper. - Cellar Selection

Wine maker notes
Nußberg (meaning “walnut hill”) is located in the 19th district and soars to nearly 1,000ft above downtown Vienna. Wines from the Nußberg tend to show greater richness than those of Bisamberg. One of his top wines is the Gemischter Satz Nußberg Alte Reben, a 50-year-old plot of nine varieties based mainly on Pinot Blanc, Neuberger, and Welshriesling. It is, as Fritz likes to say: “Vienna in a glass.” The grapes were picked by hand and processed together following the careful elimination of any botrytised grapes. A 3-hour maceration period was followed by gentle pressing with a pneumatic winepress. Fermentation took place in cooled steel tanks. After maturing for nearly one year on the fine lees, the wine was bottled.

Food pairing
Pair with Waldorf salad, porcini tarte tatin, or roast pork loin with apples.
