Eileen Hardy OBE, is fondly remembered as the matriarchof Australia's best known winemaking family. Today she is immortalised by the annual release of one Australia's great red wines, the Eileen Hardy Shiraz which was released in 1973 in honour of "Auntie Eileen's" 80th birthday. Eileen Hardy, the wine, had been born, and like the lady herself it is quite extraordinary.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet with purple hues, concentrated aromas of black plums, blueberries, anise, cinnamon and savoury oak are evident in this superb wine. A full-bodied palate with rich, juicy and ripe currant and mulberry characters provides great depth and an even structure. Firm but fine tannins are balanced by subtle, well-integrated oak, leading to a persistent, lingering finish. A flagship Hardys wine, the exceptional 1999 Eileen Hardy Shiraz will improve with careful cellaring for up to 12 years.
Winemaker's Notes
Fruit for this exceptional wine was sourced from only our best vines ranging in age from 30 - 122 years from the Schobers vineyard in the Clare Valley, Upper Tintara of McLaren Vale, Yeenunga and Frankland River vineyards and our extensive holdings in Padthaway. After the fruit was crushed, the juice was fermented in concrete open fermenters at 10 - 30 degrees celsius before being pressed in the traditional basket press. After malolactic fermentation, all of the wine was aged for 18 months in new and 1year old French barriques sourced from Bordeaux and Burgundian coopers.
