Richard and Thekla Sanford have been growing grapes organically since 1983, and were the first grape growers to obtain organic certification in Santa Barbara County by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) in the year 2000. In the year 2005, the Sanford’s sold off their namesake winery and began the 100 acre Alma Rosa organic venture in the Santa Rita Hills, focusing on organic viticulture, sustainable agriculture, eco-friendly packaging, with their entire production made in an environmentally friendly “green” facility.
Luxuriant, dark and supple, packed with vivid ripe berry flavors, a deep smoky plumminess, and polished, well balanced tannins, the wine promises a very rewarding future (although the present is quite nice as well).
Wonderful with grilled or roasted game and mushrooms, whole wheat pasta with fresh organic garden vegetables; paprika-rubbed pork ribs; lamb chops; etc.
