It’s easy to find $100 bottles of world class Syrah from Rhône appellations like Côte Rôtie, Cornas and Hermitage. The harder task is to find wine that are more reasonably priced, and that has us looking in less likely areas.
We just received the latest vintage of Domain Barou Petit Colorado Syrah, from the outstanding 2015 vintage. It’s certified organic and absolutely delicious. We carry this in most vintages, and this may be their best yet.
Emmanuel and Marie-Agnes Barou have a abour 25 acres divided in two locations. Totally organic since 1971, they also grow cherries, peaches and apricots. The Petit Colorado comes from an area west of the long, skinny St. Joseph appellation, near the town of Charnas, The soil is broken granite, and they plant on a steep hillside, pretty much the same description as the best vineyards of the region they. Because it is not an area known for vineyards, they are only allowed a Vins de Pays (country wine) designation.
The wine is hand harvested and stainless steel fermented. The result is a clean, juicy syrah. It starts out dry, and finishes dry. It’s medium bodied, and shows a lot of black pepper and a little red spice on the nose. The fruit reminds me of black cherry and black raspberry, with some tart cranberry tossed in. Secondary flavors like black pepper, black olive and a little licorice dominate the finish. It has wonderful flavor intensity. Barou Syrah carries that intensity without heavy weight or big tannins.

Stainless steel fermented
,The color is an inky, opaque, dark purple. The nose is still tight, as befits such a young wine, but still shows black fruit, black pepper and black olive. On the palate youÕll find intense, dry, crisp black fruit; black olive and a very peppery, long finish. There is plenty of tannin, but they are ripe and well integrated.
