Review
I first bought the Louis Claude Desvignes A.O.C Morgon “La Voûte Saint-Vincent” almost a year and a half ago. We started working with the 2009 vintage, and have stocked the wine ever since. Currently, we carry the 2011, and it’s an excellent vintage for drinking now: soft and easy, with just a hint of complexity. It’s a great, artisanal Beaujolais, traditionally made by one of the older winemaking families in the region. They care for the land, and it shows in the wine. This is a wine of pleasure, from a producer that I really respect. Pick some up today!

Technical notes
On a recent trip to France, I spent almost a week in the beautiful city of Lyon. One of the highlights of the trip was a chance to visit a few of the Beaujolais wine producers we work with in Villié-Morgon. At Domaine Desvignes, right in the centre of this beautiful old village, I received an easy welcome, walking right into the cave with Louis. As we tasted the wines, I discovered their great range of freshness and beauty, as well as their differences. All were made from Gamay grapes, of course, and many from old vines; they were sourced from plots in various parts of the Morgon appellation. Louis farms using very traditional methods, harvesting by hand (not always guaranteed in this part of France), and vinifying traditionally with the goal to create age-worthy wines. It’s always amazing to taste alongside winemakers, and I learn a lot traveling and tasting this way! Thanks to Louis for hosting me!

Food pairing
Pairing wine with food isn’t always easy for a vegetarian. However, a strategy that often works for me is regionality — pairing food and wine from the same place. While in Lyon recently, I paired the phenomenal Louis Claude Desvignes Morgon with two traditional regional dishes. The first dish was a plate of vegetarian quenelles, oval-shaped dumplings that are similar to Italian gnocchi. Quenelles can be made with fish, meat, fowl — or in my case, just dough served with a simple sauce. The second dish, Cervelle de Canut —  literally, silk worker’s brain — sounds meat-based but in fact is simply a creamy cheese spread that is very easy to make yourself. It is strewn with herbs, garlic, and chives that can be enjoyed on its own or with a crispy baguette. These foods are simple, hearty and delicious, and pair well with the freshness, acidity and beautiful red currant flavors of this Beaujolais. There’s great complexity and just the right amount of earthy notes in this handmade wine, especially at this price.
