Neal Family Zinfandel 2010

Neal Family Zinfandel 2010

Sku: 034533

In 1966 my parents purchased their first property in the now widely known Rutherford AVA. Our Rutherford Dust Vineyard #1 was known more for Cabernet Sauvignon because of the alluvial soils. My dad and I originally planted Zinfandel back in 1971 on this property and it was the complete source of our Zinfandel fruit in the 2002, 2003 and 2004 bottlings. Eventually the home ranch needed to be replanted, so we removed the AXR1 rootstock vines over a four year period. The replanting allowed the addition of three acres of Petite Syrah next to the seven acres of Zinfandel, comprised of clonal selections for each variety that have been in the family for generations. We are proud to continue the tradition from Mom’s home, making this 100% estate grown from our Rutherford Dust Vineyard and 100% certified organically grown by CCOF and USDA.

Tasting notes
It is very rewarding to release such a delightful wine from a challenging growing year. For those who know our Zinfandel, we look for true varietal expression and balanced characteristics. The brambly fruit – raspberry and cherry – along with the dusty texture are apparent from the first aromas. This vintage shows that Rutherford Dust character: tannins and a mouthfeel suggesting cocoa powder. The flavors echo the fruit and this texture with slightly spicy and tea like nuances. Thanks to the tannins, it is a bit drier this vintage, giving a texture that is rich and structured in the mouth. On the finish the fruit has the pepper and jam flavor, making for a wine that is unmistakably our Rutherford Zinfandel.

Wine maker notes
When the winemaker's wife uses "magical" as a descriptor, we think we did it right. Aromas of berries and spice, balanced oak toast and plum fruit rise from the glass, bringing back memories of strawberry jam cooking in the kitchen Floral characters mix with the rich, ripe fruit and are abundantly present along with hints of chocolate, pepper and spice. This has a well structured mouthfeel with a sweet texture to the moderate tannins (slightly more than last year,), making an enjoyable Zinfandel now in its youth or with additional bottle age, a more complex food friendly wine.
