| Josef "Pepi" Umathum began practicing Biodynamic viticulture starting with the 2005 vintage, and has since been certified by Demeter Österreich, after previously receiving organic certification from Austria Bio Garantie. According to Pepi, “Our wines are food for the soul...these are liquid folk-tales.” Umathum has become known for getting different rhythms, tunes and textures out of his Zweigelt bush vines. He does this by means of extraordinary care and painstaking selection in his vineyards, careful crop sizing, and detailed hand harvesting and selection in the cellar. The wines are fermented on indigenous yeasts and elaborated in large wooden barrels made of Austrian oak.
Vibrant in appearance with dark violet-purple on the rim. The wine shows beautiful density, very rich and luxuriant on the palate, with spicy blue fruit and fresh herb aromas on the nose, ripe flavors in the mouth, and a bit of chocolate on the finish with nicely ripened tannins and perfect balanced. |
