Quinta da Roeda forms the backbone of the Croft Vintage Porto, produced only in years when vineyard conditions are optimal and warrant a “declared vintage.” Wines from Quinta da Roeda are characteristically plump, full and vigorously fruity, with the hallmark aroma of the gum cistus bush—a character that informs the Croft house style. The grapes are trod by foot in granite lagares to minimize the release of harsh, bitter compounds from skins and seeds, and the wine spends two years aging in vat before bottling. Croft Vintage Porto will continue to develop in the bottle and may be cellared for decades before opening.

Tasting notes
Elegant and refined in the Croft style, the house?s vintage ports are characterized by cool, integrated black fruit, firm acidic structure and a reticent backbone in youth, gaining grace, complexity and lovely fruit and coffee complexity with age.

The 2007 Croft Vintage has a soft, fig and date-scented bouquet that opens up beautifully in the glass, warm and inviting. The palate is medium-bodied with soft, supple tannin, a fine line of acidity and a ripe finish with dark cherries, boysenberry jam and a citric edge lending poise and delineation. There is a nice hint of fieriness on the finish that gives it a little hubris and brio, though not excessively, since that would not be in keeping with Croft?s style.

Shows aromas of very ripe fruit and sweet tobacco, with hints of earth and spices. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with round, velvety tannins and a long, fruity finish. Likeable for its soft texture. Best after 2016. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. –JS
