Hajszan Gewmischter Satz

The correct spelling of this wine is Gemischter Satz.

Cool air currents from the Danube blanket the picturesque, limestone rich vineyards of Nußberg, located just outside of Vienna. Stefan Hajszan farms his 14 hectares of vineyard biodynamically to bring out the true terroir of his wines. No artificial pesticide, herbicides or fungicides are used, and all of his biodynamic preparations are applied in accordance with the phases of the moon.

Gemischter Satz is a uniquely Viennese approach to white wine . Rather than planting individual blocks of a vineyard to single grape varieties, a Gemischter Satz is made from a field blend of different grapes planted together. This blend of grapes is then harvested and fermented in the same tank or barrel. As different grapes ripen variously, some will be ripe, others slightly under ripe, others slightly over ripe. The result is a wine of complexity and flavor. The under ripe grapes give freshness and acidity, the ripe grapes give fruit and texture. The 2007 Hajszan Gemischter Satz is made from a blend of eight hand harvested grape varieties: Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Weissburgunder, Frühroter Veltliner, Zweigelt, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Müller Thurgau. Fresh and invigorating in the mouth with juicy citrus and apple fruit flavors and perfectly balanced acidity. Once tasted, it becomes clear how Biodynamics can bring out the great terroir characteristics of a wine.

In his November 4th article, New York Times wine critic Eric Asiimov picked the 2007 Hajszan Gemischter Satz as his favorite of a tasting of "exquisite" wines, describing it as, "...a gorgeous wine that is both delicate and intense...drinking this wine — and feeling the lacy lightness of its flavors — I could not help imagining myself at a Viennese café, watching the city go by."

A great aperitif, it also compliments first courses, light seafood and salads.
