Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne 2012

Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne 2012

The history of the Vietti winery traces its roots back to the 19th Century. The estate, which has been in the Vietti family for four generations, is based in the village of Castiglione Falletto in Piedmont’s Langhe region. In 1919 Mario Vietti transformed the family’s farm into a grape growing and wine producing business, creating the first Vietti labeled wines. Alfredo Currado married Mario’s daughter Luciana and made a name for Vietti’s single-vineyard Barolo and Barbera. He also put the native Piedmont varietal Arneis on the wine map. In 1990 Alfredo and Luciana’s son Luca joined the family business as winemaker after working at California’s Simi Winery, Opus One and Long Vineyards, and Bordeaux’s Mouton- Rothschild. His innovative winemaking utilizes a unique combination of modern and traditional practices. He eliminated equipment that measures acid and tannin levels in favor of a more intuitive approach. Vietti organically farms more than 25 single vineyards with vines up to 90 years of age.

Rating
Wine Spectator, 90 Points:
A bright, flashy version, featuring black currant and blackberry fruit that shows notes of vanilla and spice. The oak adds tannins, lending this a tight feel on the otherwise fine finish.
#76 in the Top 100 released in December.

Wine maker notes
Designation: Barbera d’Asti DOC
Grapes: 100% Barbera

Winemaking:
grapes from vineyards in Agliano d’Asti, in the La Crena site with part of the oldest vineyards used for our Cru La Crena and other adjacent vineyards. 4.800 plants per hectare with a yield between 40 and 50 hl/ha. Cold pre-fermentation maceration for 96 hours. The must is kept, for 16 days, in stainless steel tanks at 30-32°C (86-89.6°F). with frequent pumping over and “délestage.” Malolactic fermentation in barriques and following contact with the lees for 6 months.

Aging:
At the end of the malolactic fermentation, the wine is moved into French oak barrels or Slovenian oak casks for 14 months, then into steel tanks 2 months before bottling. The wine is bottled unfiltered to retain complexity.

Description:
Ruby purple color with ripe red cherry aromas with hints of mineral and vanilla. A dry, medium bodied red wine with refreshing acidity (making it perfect to pair with food) and soft tannins, the Barbera d’Asti Tre Vigne is well balanced with good integration of oak, good complexity and a finish of more red cherries.

Food Pairings:
Antipasti, rich salads, grilled seasoned vegetables, hearty soups, pastas or with breaded veal, pork, chicken with light sauces.

Alcohol: 14,05% Alc. by vol.
