Review
Charles Smith named his Merlot The Velvet Devil for onevery good reason: It is super smooth. It carries classic Washington Merlot aromas of dark cherry, cedar, and tobacco with a hint of anise. The tannins are soft and smooth and give the wine a great, juicy mouthfeel. There is a little Cabernet Sauvignon added to the wine to give it an extra velvety quality of chocolate.

Wine maker notes
PURE VELVET! Milk chocolate, wild blackberry, baking spice, rose oil...beautifully perfumed Washington in a glass....Velvet Devil? HELL YEAH!

Other text
Charles Smith is a self-taught winemaker who fell in love with Walla Walla when he passed through in 1999 while on a road trip. In 2006, he started his second brand, Charles Smith Wines, which he dubbed his “modernist project.” Charles wanted to give the consumer good wines that reflected the reality of how most of us drink the bottles we buy: immediately. With a focus on both the vineyard and the varietal, Charles Smith wines are approachable, everyday wines at a great price.

Food pairing
Pump, rich, and smooth, The Velvet Devil 2011 has great body and is ideal for dishes like beef bourguignon, pasta with Bolognese sauce, or duck. Washington Merlot is vastly different from California Merlot, and this bottle truly lets the varietal shine.
