Stift Gœttweig is a monastery founded in 1083 by Saint Altmann, the bishop of Passau, and was given to the Benedictines in 1094. Since that time, wine growing has been in continuous production and has been the basis of the local economy at the monastery. Messwein, or Altar wine, has been an institution at Stift Gœttweig for centuries. From the nature-friendly cultivation of the vines to the care and processing of the grapes and wine, the "Reinheitsgebot” or "purity law" of the church must be obeyed. Messwein cannot be produced without the permission of the bishop, and it must only be natural and unaltered.

Light and fruity with an easily drinkable 12% alcohol, elegantly enhanced with classic, though subtle, Veltliner spice notes. Fresh and invigorating on the palate, it makes a refreshing aperitif and is an ideal accompaniment to spicy Asian dishes.
