Review

La Castellada takes a middle of the road approach with this Pinot Grigio ramato (copper), resulting in a wine that's not exactly white and not quite full on orange. This results from shorter times of extended skin contact (less than 20 days) than fellow producers Gravner and Radikon. An utterly unique wine only produced during certain vintages. The 2006 is the current release. A worthy splurge for a rare wine that one never sees on the retail end, and twice as much in a restaurant setting.

Wine maker notes

In 1956 Giuseppe Bensa purchased a small piece of land in order to produce wine to be sold at his inn without realizing La Castellada would quickly become a benchmark Italian producer. Near the end of the seventies his sons Giorgio and Nicolò took over the estate, and today Nicolò works together with his son, Stefano. La Castellada maintains a beautiful collection of organically farmed vineyard parcels situated in the Oslavia subzone of the Collio, in the far northeastern corner of Friuli. The estate is a leader within the zone due to their adoption of spontaneous, open-vat fermentation, prolonged skin contact, sophisticated, customized oak treatment, vat maturation, and bottling without filtration or sulfur treatment. Each grape, lot, clone, and barrel is treated individually with respect to the vintage.

MMI: MOON & MINIMAL INTERVENTION The distributor DSWE uses this term which encompasses wine producers that go beyond organics and practice grape growing and wine making that is also known as biodynamic viticulture. However, MMI producers do not need to be certified as biodynamic. These producers do in fact take many of the guiding principles and practices of biodynamics. Some of them are part of organized certification groups of biodynamic producers, such as Renaissance des Terroirs or Demeter, while others are not involved in an organization on any level, yet are dedicated in their own practical or philosophical way.
