Domaine Sigalas Santorini Assyrtiko - Athiri 2013

Domaine Sigalas Santorini Assyrtiko - Athiri 2013

I am in love with the idea that there are unique wines from all over the world, and whenever I find one; I taste it. If the wine tastes great, as this one does, I bring it in to the store for people to try. Sigalas Santorini has become our best selling Greek wine. A blend of 75 percent Assyrtiko and 25 percent Athiri, it has brilliant, clean lemon notes with a tangy hint of brine and just a touch of volcanic mineral earth. The best way to enjoy this simply amazing wine? Chill a bottle or two, find a beautiful place to sit outside, and savor it the way the Greeks do.

The 2013 Aa is a blend of 75% Assyrtiko and 25% Athiri. (Remember that "Aa" is simply the new name and packaging for the familiar blend Sigalas marketed as Asirtiko / Athiri for many years.) There are times when I think that this is one of the more underrated wines on the island, always showing persistence and high personality while remaining fresh, reasonably ageworthy, aromatic and sunny. If it is never as rich and concentrated as the big boys, it always seems livelier, more fragrant and transparent. Its personality tends to make up for the lesser power. This is a nice year for it if you like what it does best – the transparency and the sunny, fresh feel. Revel in the purity here this summer and over the next several years. They have demonstrated to me that they tend to age better than most suspect, but unlike the typical big boys from Sigalas, they can be completely enticing and ready this year, too. Drink now-2020.

It’s no surprise that the Greek island Santorini is also called Kalisti, or the most beautiful. A famed vacation spot, it boasts amazing beaches, fantastic hotels and a plethora of superb seafood. But what many people don't know is that it is also home to one of the world’s oldest vineyards. The island is known for crisp, clean, dry white wines made from ancient heirloom grapes. The location presents certain challenges, requiring the vines to be trained in a circle so that the grapes grow on the inside and are protected from the sun by the leaves and from the wind by the trunk. Domaine Sigalas Santorini began in a family home, and as of 1998 has been based at a modern winery in the village of Baxedes. Not only are the grapes here organic, but the proprietor is working on making the entire region organic.

Food pairing
This wine is delicious with classic Mediterranean dishes like grilled fish with a hint of spice, and my favorite, a salad of micro greens topped with grilled halloumi cheese and Greek olives. The briny nature of the olives really comes out, and the denseness of the cheese is cut perfectly by the wine’s acidity.
