Gramona Penedes Gessami 2011

The harvest was conducted according to the grapes' times of ripeness; first the Muscat of Alexandria, second the Muscat de Fontignac and finally the Sauvignon Blanc. The wine's varieties were vinted separately, and fermentation on skins was used for maximum aromatic extraction from a soft pressing, obtaining only the flower must, or 40% extraction. The fermentation was later carried out at 13/15ºC

Tasting notes

Nose: Aromatic burst. Like a walk in the spring, this wine reminds one of the coolness of fresh air, a bunch of white flowers, (roses, jasmine, etc.), fennel, apricots and peaches all wrapped in a sweet atmosphere full of freshness, with a subtle mineral glow and an enveloping evocation of infusions and a citric breeze. Taste: It surrounds you with a sticky atmosphere, freshness, mild and also flexible feel. Long, smooth aftertaste.

Review

Gramona’s history is long and storied and the property has been a quality reference point in the zone for decades. As far back as 1816 a member of the family has been making wine in the Penedes. 1921 marks the year when the Gramona name began to be put on bottles of their wines and Cava. Today, the house is one of the few remaining family-owned estates in the region, with many having been bought by large companies. Gramona Gessami Blanco is a blend of 30% Muscat of Alexandria 30% Muscat of Frontignan 30% Sauvignon Blanc 10 % Gewürztraminer. Gessami Blanco is one of the most intriguing blends made in the DO of Penedes, Catalonia. An Exuberant bouquet of white peaches, flowers, honey and citrus jump out of the glass with force and focus. Enticing, fresh, and lively Gessami Blanco rivals some of the best Alsace blends I have ever tasted. Best to pair with Asian-style dishes (Szechuan cuisine specifically)but lovely as an aperretif! "Drink outside the box" and bring a bottle home and you will be reminded as to why Catalonia is one of the most enigmatic wine regions of the world.
