Review
Well, duh, they were so nice to me when I went there and I’ve been waiting for it to be available in the States ever since! No, no, only kidding. This wine is great—both delicate and tasty. Plus the Hodgsons make natural wines working a lot of small plots in the Loire. Young and talented, they are developing a reputation for producing very good wines. Try this one and be amazed at what two dedicated artists can do.

While visiting the beautiful city of Anjou before heading to the Django Rheinhardt festival in Samois-sur-Seine, my wife and I decided to visit a local vintner. Bert Celce, who writes Wine Tasting, Vineyards, in France (WineTerroirs.com), recommended Mai and Kenji Hodgson, so we took a day and visited them at their winery. First up was lunch, then we toured the vineyards, including many of the ones where the fruit for this wine is grown. After that, we spent a couple of hours in the winery tasting, re-tasting and talking about wine and how it is created. The Hodgsons produce several unique wines, including this blend. It's a light wine made by carbonic maceration (most of the juice is fermented while still in the grape) using several local varieties, including Grolleau, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir. Enjoy it soon, for fun.

Food pairing
Kenji and Mai served this wine with a lunch of stuffed red peppers—some with pork, others with cheese, rice, and red onions—a salad of radishes, greens, and tomatoes, all from a neighbor’s garden, and a superb cheese plate accompanied by fantastic French bread and butter. The wine was perfect, allowing the complex richness of the foods to show. It has flavors of currants, berries, and earth and base notes of forest floor and mushrooms, yet is never overpowering. Chill it slightly before serving and then enjoy it with the bounty of fall foods that are becoming available in New York right now.
