Review
For those of you (like me) increasingly bored with the sameness of wine around the world, look to the Italy’s region of Campania. Recently, I found a new Fiano from Petilia, a family-run winery settled by Teresa and Roberto Bruno in the mid 80s, and was lucky enough to meet them both last month. The Petilia estate is situated in Irpinia, the mountainous region in mainland Campania, where superb raw materials and an ideal vine-growing climate create some of Italy’s most esteemed white wines. The combination of high altitude, volcanic and lime/clay soils, a long growing season, and favorable diurnal temperature variations make for white wines with stunning aromatics, finesse, and energy. The Brunos are committed to quality viticulture and minimally intrusive winemaking, and vintage after vintage, they succeed at bottling brightly perfumed, savory Fiano di Avellino. There is tangible levity and cool mineral cut in this genuine, unoaked, unmarket-driven wine. The Brunos 2010 effort allows Fiano’s typicity, its true nature to speak. – Melissa S. | Wine Buyer
