G.D. Vajra Barolo d'Albe 2009

Sku: 052222

G.D. Vajra was founded in 1972 by husband and wife Aldo and Milena Vaira. When Aldo inherited almost 100 acres of vineyards in Vergne the highest village in the Commune of Barolo he broke from family tradition and began producing wines under his own label. The wines are made from 100% estate fruit that is triple sorted by hand. For more than 40 years, this wonderfully humble and hard-working couple has crafted soulful and honest expressions of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Moscato and Riesling. G.D. Vajra is entirely a family affair. The winery was named after Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico, and Aldo and Milena work with their daughter Francesca and sons, Giuseppe and Isidoro. Their guiding philosophy is simple - they are not modern, they are not traditional. They practice sustainable farming and craft sensitive, ransparent wines of place by patiently allowing the fruit to dictate its own evolution. “I try to make wines that give people joy. In the past, wine was food, it was necessary for sustenance. Today that is not the case; we choose to drink for pleasure. I want to make wines that bring people happiness. ~ Aldo Vajra

Tasting notes
The rose, strawberry and cherry aromas are elegantly framed by hints of tobacco and earth. A pure and delicate effort that captures the heart of Barolo.

2007: 90 Points - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: "An austere 2007, with a tightly knit core of cherry, strawberry and spice flavors. The structure is firm and the alcohol elevated, throwing some heat on the finish. Should settle down with age. "

Technical notes
Albe is a blend of grapes from three estate vineyards located in commune of Barolo Fossati, Coste di Vergne and La Volta. The hand-picked, triple sorted fruit was fermented and macerated for 20 days in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with punch downs. The wine aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 42 months and exhibits the classic lines and transparency of fruit that are the hallmarks of wines from this estate.
