Sourced from vines grown on terra rosa and volcanic soil, 2500 feet above sea level. Vertical shoot positioning trained vines grow with little irrigation. Yields are very low after cluster thinning.

The 2010 SPECIAL RESERVE white comes with a hefty price tag; scarcity is likely the key reason as there were only 350 cases produced. It is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 25% Viognier and 25% Sauvignon Blanc, aged for 8 months in barrel. Showing a bit of barrel at its young age, including some astringency on the finish early on, it also features juicy fruit, some spice and a flavor profile from the blend that I grew to like a lot as it aired out and evolved, showing some grip on the finish. Aromatic and quite tasty, this is refreshing and easy to warm up to, if rather pricey for what it is. Drink now-2014. Recanati’s Reserve level wines have always offered some value for the region. With the debut of the 2009s, the winery has added some structure and a little more gravitas as well, making this a very nice lineup for a region that tends to be short on values—but note that, due to their small production, some of the most interesting reserves now show some significant price spikes, taking them well out of the value range and into Recanati’s “special reserve” top of the line pricing. That said, 2009 easily looks like Recanati’s best vintage yet.”

Wine maker notes
After careful hand harvesting in August, grapes are brought cold to the winery where they are gently pressed as whole clusters to preserve maximum levels of aroma and flavor. Only free-run juice is used. The juice begins fermentation in stainless steel tanks at 57 degrees Fahrenheit and completes fermentation in barrel, where it rests sur lie. The wine underwent 50% malolactic fermentation and was bottled on May of the following year.
