Ribera Vineyard Counoise 2009

Ribera Vineyard Counoise 2009

This is a light, elegant style red, reminiscent of a Pinot Noir for those who have not tried Counois

tís easy to find popular grapes such as Merlot and Riesling for our Washington state section, but when an obscure, fun varietal like this comes along, itís hard not to fall in love. Itís one of the grapes allowed in Ch‚teauneuf-du-Pape blends ó though rarely used ó and a few of the microclimates in Washingtonís Columbia Valley really allow this grape to thrive. For those who havenít tried Counoise before, itís reminiscent of a Pinot Noir. Ribera Vineyardsí Counoise is beautiful in the glass, showing a soft plum hue. It is a light, elegant, pretty red, with delicate raspberry and strawberry notes on both the nose and palate and enough fresh acidity to complement all kinds of dishes, especially spicy ones. A hint of subtle earth on the finish brings the wine together and entices you to take another sip.

Food pairing
This refreshing wine is elegant enough to sip and savor on its own, but itís also an excellent foil to a grilled salmon steak seasoned with garlic, onion, and a little pepper. If youíre like me, give your salmon extra kick by topping it with salsa; the soft tannins of the Counoise will stand up strong to the dishís heat. ~ John, Wine Buyer at 67Wine
