Ribera Vineyard Counoise 2009

Ribera Vineyard Counoise 2009

Sku: 053430

Don’t let the name fool you. This 100% Counoise grape is not from Spain but from Washington State's Red Mountain AVA. Traditionally, Counoise is one of the grapes allowed in Chatenuf du Pape blends, but the many micro-climates within the Columbia Valley allow this grape to thrive. It is a light, elegant style red, reminiscent of a Pinot Noir for those who have not tried Counoise before. This pretty red has delicate notes of raspberry and strawberry on the nose and palate and has pleasant acidity to make it a balanced, smooth wine. This Washington Counoise is a very easy drinking wine, and can be paired with a range of foods, but can also be enjoyed on its own. If you have not yet tried this grape, it is one that will leave you pleasantly surprised.

t’s easy to find popular grapes such as Merlot and Riesling for our Washington state section, but when an obscure, fun varietal like this comes along, it’s hard not to fall in love. It’s one of the grapes allowed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends — though rarely used — and a few of the microclimates in Washington’s Columbia Valley really allow this grape to thrive. For those who haven’t tried Counoise before, it’s reminiscent of a Pinot Noir. Ribera Vineyards’ Counoise is beautiful in the glass, showing a soft plum hue. It is a light, elegant, pretty red, with delicate raspberry and strawberry notes on both the nose and palate and enough fresh acidity to complement all kinds of dishes, especially spicy ones. A hint of subtle earth on the finish brings the wine together and entices you to take another sip.

Food pairing
This refreshing wine is elegant enough to sip and savor on its own, but it’s also an excellent foil to a grilled organic salmon steak seasoned with garlic powder, onion powder, and a little pepper. If you’re like me, give your salmon extra kick by topping it with salsa; the soft tannins of the Counoise will stand up strong to the dish’s heat. ~ Samantha, Wine Buyer at 67Wine
