Below a neat and unpretentious house along a quiet backstreet in Volnay, is a 13th century cellar that houses a treasure trove of wines from Domaine Michel Lafarge. The estate dates back to the early 19th century and proprietors Michel and his son Frederic craft some of Burgundy’s most precise and penetrating wines. Father and son lovingly tend their 25-acre Domaine, of which just over half is located in Volnay. Viticulture is sensitive and relies on natural and traditional methods. When it becomes necessary to replace vines, grafts from existing old vines of the Domaine are used to maintain the vineyard’s unique ”selection massale.”. The entire Domaine was converted to biodynamic farming in 2000 - a natural progression of the Lafarge philosophy which aims to strike a balance between nature and the contributions of the vigneron. These wines are characterized by a finely-tuned combination of refinement, structure and balance.

The 2010 Volnay Vendanges Selectionnees shows the precision of a finely cut gem. It boasts gorgeous verve, beautifully articulated fruit and fabulous overall balance. There is marvelous tension in the glass as the wine shows off its considerable charms. Clean, chalky notes frame the finish. The Vendanges Selectionnees is a selection of the domaine’s best village-level parcels. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. ”
