Hook and ladder is the story of a family owned and operated winery, one whose roots run deep in Sonoma County wine-making. In 1970, San Francisco firefighter Cecil De Loach and his wife Christine staked their claim in the wine grape business by purchasing 24 acres of old-vine Zinfandel in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. In the early seventies, the De Loaches decided to acquire additional vineyard land. For several years they watched others make notable wine from their grapes before making the decision to produce wine under the De Loach label in 1975. More than three decades later, Cecil and Christine sold that label and have continued their winemaking skills at the helm of a small family winery that employs a simple philosophy – craft exceptional wines, from the highest quality grapes, that people love to drink.
Situated on 375 acres in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley, their vineyards produce cool climate grapes widely recognized as some of the finest in the world. They make their Pinot Noir in small batches with native yeast fermentation. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for up to 8 months to achieve optimum balance and complexity.
As old-timers in the community, the De Loach family is committed to Sonoma County's environmental preservation, and have including 118 acres of their property in the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District. They choose techniques, like integrated pest management, which protect Sonoma's ecosystem, and make efforts to protect water supply, oak trees and other agricultural resources.
|Wine maker notes
|We use old world techniques, whole berries, and whole clusters to make our Pinot Noir in small batches that we "punch-down" up to three times a day. After native yeast fermentation the wine is aged in French oak barrels for upto 8 months to achieve optimum balance and complexity. Our Pinot Noir displays a deep, dark magenta and purple color followed by aromas of raspberries, black cherry and cola with hints of cinnamon and spice. The full mixed black and red berry palate is accented by vanilla and cinnamon with a smooth finish of lingering raspberry, cherry and heavy spice. This multi-layered Pinot is lovely and rich; able to be enjoyed with a meal or on its own.
