Carmel Road Chardonnay 2011

Review
I wanted to bring in a Chardonnay that captures the essence of Monterey’s cool Pacific climate with expressive fruit character and finesse. Carmel Road fits the bill perfectly, and at a very reasonable price; it has both layers of flavor and a refined delivery. The body of this wine is ripe with pineapple, peach and citrus curd on the nose. On the palate, these flavors expand to include green apple and soft, lingering spices. Its balanced acidity is clean and lasting, making this a wonderful food wine. The Carmel Road Chardonnay shows a powerful face yet does not overpower in the least; it’s an archetype in balance.

Wine maker notes
Our Chardonnays are known for their rich flavors, firm acidity and brilliant varietal flavors. But it is the pronounced minerality that sets them apart from their peers throughout the Golden State. To retain the essence of the soil, we use a number of low-input winemaking techniques including: partial native yeast fermentations, regular lees stirring, malolactic fermentation, and minimal processing. This Chardonnay was sourced primarily from the Clark Vineyard, certified sustainable by the SIP organization (Sustainability In Practice) since 2008.

Carmel Road was founded in 1997 in the Arroyo Seco region of Monterey. This area benefits from cool afternoon breezes and occasional nighttime temperatures dipping down towards freezing — ideal for long growing seasons that produce fine Chardonnay. Not only does the Pacific temperature influence this AVA, but the valley receives relatively scant rainfall, which helps to concentrate flavors in the wine. The 2011 Chardonnay is sourced mostly from the Clark Vineyard in Arroyo Seco. Barrel-fermented on the lees using natural and cultured yeasts, it’s aged in a combination of new and used French and American oak for seven months before bottling.

Food pairing
Right now, I’m diving into the tastes and textures of summer cooking, and Carmel Road Chardonnay proves a mighty companion. The wine’s fresh fruit notes and balanced acidity make it a delightful match for poached salmon with asparagus, or even seared scallops over soba noodles and sautéed shitake mushrooms — the earthiness of the soba highlights the wine’s soft mineral finish. Perhaps my favorite dish to enjoy this delicious Chardonnay with, though, are vegetables from the farmers’ market (carrots and ramps, maybe — but get the ramps before they disappear!) grilled and served with roast chicken and a white bean salad that’s been dressed simply in lemon juice, olive oil and fresh herbs.
