Review
I am impressed with the independent spirit of this winemaker. He has honed his craft and earned his reputation the old-fashioned way, through dedication and hard work. The story of how he came into winemaking through a chance encounter—one that convinced him that he should follow it as a life path—reminds me very much of my own career. Ross Andrew Mikel, a small producer creating only 125 barrels per year, continues to shine as one the top winemakers in the Pacific Northwest. That’s not hyperbole: His Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded 97 points by Wine Spectator. That is the highest rating ever given to a Washington Cab!

Wine maker notes
Winemaker, Ross Andrew Mikel, says "Don't mess up what the vineyards give us, and keep the process entertaining and lively. Too many people try to make wine into much more than it is and it ends up coming across as an intimidating and elitist pursuit. Our goal is to go in the other direction: keep it simple and make it fun. Bottom line: we're having a great time making delicious wines!" The high altitude, cool climate of Oregon's Willamette Valley is incredible for this fourth vintage of Pinot Blanc-dominant blend MEADOW. Reminiscent of the playful wines of Alsace, the dry wine is again Pinot Blanc dominant with a splash of Pinto Gris, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer to give the wine incredible aromatics.

Note from the winery: 2011 is the fourth vintage of our MEADOW White Wine. This wine pulls together the best of Oregon's Willamette Valley and Washington's Columbia Gorge AVA and blends it into an incredibly fresh and delicious wine. 2011 was another cool vintage for both regions, but this is what we like to see for aromatic white varieties where a bright palate is a critical component. This dry wine is again Pinot Blanc dominant with a splash of Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer to give the wine incredible aromatics.
Aromatics
Bosc Pear, minerals and a touch of rose petal.
Palate
Fresh, vibrant and complex. This qualifies as a definite Porch Pounder.

Food pairing
Fresh, vibrant and complex, the Ross Andrew Meadow White 2011 definitely qualifies as a superb food wine. Oysters on the half shell are a great place to start. Another excellent pairing is slightly spicy food, such as Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches or Cuban pork tacos. The wine’s barely noticeable hint of residual sugar balances the heat wonderfully.
