Bandol of any color is some of the most satisfying wineyou can get your hands on; the region produces richly textured whites and masculine, gutsy reds. Yet Bandol and Tavel are the undisputed kings of the rosé world, and this relative newcomer won me over entirely. As I tasted this season’s rosés, I noticed that some were lively, and others were flat; few had both richness and “nerve,” an electric thing that is hard to describe but easy to identify. That electricity makes the Domaine de la Tour Bandol Rosé a vital, necessary wine.

Agnès Henry's family has owned this estate since 1968. After enlisting some help with winemaking in her early years, she’s now fully in charge of the farm. Farmed organically (unofficially, but truly), this blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Cinsault has notes of strawberries and licorice, with a long, juicy finish.

Food pairing
On a recent vacation to Portland, my wife and I had an extravagant tasting menu at Noisette. We only wanted to drink one bottle of wine, and we decided on a Bandol Rosé. Rosé is incredibly versatile with food, and this was the only wine that we thought would match up to the entire succession of seafood, meat, and vegetable dishes. As the bottle sat on the table, it gradually warmed to room temperature, evolving from a fresh and lively “white” into a deep, vivid “red.” The rosé was perfect with each and every dish — all nine of them! Props to the celebrated chef Anthony Demes, who envisioned that unforgettable meal.
