Schmitges Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spatlese 2011

Wine maker notes
Andreas Schmitges is fairly unique among the finer vintners of the Middle Mosel, in that he thinks of wine in terms of texture, as well as fruit and the influence of soils on its flavor.

in the village of Erden, Andreas and wife Waltraud begin their story by saying that "the key to good wine lies in the preservation of the soil." On the steeply-raked hillsides of the Erdner Treppchen and Erdner Prälat, this is a time-consuming and physically demanding task.

The estate cultivates some 8 Hectares of vines in these top-sites, where the Mosel river snakes its way through this dramatically imposing valley, where the vineyards are planted in rather severe slate and machines dare not venture.

Andreas demonstrates with his Trocken bottlings that the acidity of the Mosel can express itself as bracing rather than biting in a dry wine—and his more "classical" expressions of Spaetlese and Auslese hold pace with the finest in the Wehlen-pocket.
